Italian restaurant in london

"Bancone Covent Garden" in London, England, is a modern Italian restaurant that specializes in handmade pasta and is part of the small yet esteemed Bancone group, founded in 2018 by Louis Korovilas, a former chef at the Michelin-starred Locanda Locatelli. Located in the heart of Covent Garden, one of the city's liveliest neighborhoods, it has quickly made a name for itself, notably being awarded the Michelin Bib Gourmand, which highlights its excellent quality and good value for money. The restaurant attracts pasta lovers, theater-goers, and tourists who take advantage of its proximity to attractions like Trafalgar Square and the National Gallery, offering a straightforward yet refined culinary experience.

Best handmade pasta in london

The atmosphere at "Bancone Covent Garden" is vibrant and casual, characterized by a sleek, industrial design that still radiates an inviting warmth. The long, narrow space features three dining counters where guests can sit and watch the chefs in the open kitchen at work—a spectacle particularly enhanced by the daily rolling and shaping of fresh pasta in the window. The decor combines raw elements like concrete with functional high stools and a few traditional tables, giving the establishment a modern, urban touch. Especially on busy days, an energetic vibe prevails, supported by the friendly, youthful staff, although there may occasionally be minor delays in service during peak times.

Live cooking experience restaurant

Culinarily, "Bancone Covent Garden" represents a creative interpretation of Italian cuisine, with pasta at the center—prepared fresh by hand daily and inspired by the 20 regions of Italy as well as European influences. A highlight is the famous "Silk Handkerchiefs," delicate pasta sheets served with walnut butter and a confit egg yolk, celebrated for their silky texture and rich flavor. Equally popular is the "Bucatini with Spicy Pork and ‘Nduja Ragu," a spicy dish that pairs robust pasta with a fiery meat sauce, leaving a lasting impression. The "Pappardelle with Braised Ox Cheek" offers a hearty option, where wide noodles harmonize with tender braised beef cheek and a hint of Barolo vinegar. For a lighter start, the "Rosemary & Sea Salt Focaccia," a fragrant bread with a crispy crust and aromatic notes, is delightful.

Lively atmosphere in covent garden

The drink selection is equally thoughtful and perfectly complements the dishes. The wine list features a mix of lesser-known wineries and familiar names, while the cocktails are based on vermouth, bitters, and Campari, providing an elegant accompaniment to the meals. "Bancone Covent Garden" also offers the option to host private celebrations in a separate dining room, where large platters and bowls are served family-style, enhancing the communal atmosphere.

We had dinner for 4 on Friday 7 March and had a 7.45 booking. We arrived early and things started well. Seated In a cosy booth. One of our party really doesn’t like chillies or pepper and expressed this at the outset. The staff seemed rushed and not wildly helpful when we asked questions about the menu and what would be suitable for our friend with her preferences. We were hurried or order. Put starters were delicious - the burrata and tomatoes were especially good. Our mains arrived swiftly and the waiter asked if the pepper sauce would be okay for our friend - which given she had asked for no pepper wasn’t. They gave her just one option - so she didn’t have a choice but to take it and also the three of us started our meal while she had to wait and eat her meal as ours was almost over. The staff weren’t that apologetic. Also the staff kept dropping cutlery off plates - we noticed at least 6 occasions of clattering cutlery on the floor. The acoustics are loud already. We were told at 9pm they needed the table back (we’d only been there 75 mins) and we hadn’t finished the bottle of wine so we were rushed. While the food was good the service was well below what I would expect for a restaurant of this calibre and for the prices charged. It was not a relaxing experience and certainly not a Michelin experience.

Lovely meal. Very good value and excellent service. Handkerchief pasta and cauliflower delicious, want to try artichoke next time. I accidentally cancelled and they kindly reinstated it as soon as I realised what I had done. Just a little noisy - a bit tricky if you’re older or hard of hearing.

Perfectly prepared pappardelle with lamb, great Negronis, chill atmosphere. Nice sitting at the bar watching the chefs make it all happen.

Da italiana i primi sono troppo rielaborati per essere definiti piatti di pasta buoni

Very busy restaurant but we got a table for 3 for lunch. It all feels a little cramped but it's a stylish and nice looking restaurant. The bar stools are probably a nicer option if it's just 2 of you. We shared the potato sourdough bread, burrata and pasta fritti and all dishes were delicious. Full of flavour, nicely presented and great taste. We shared the Cacio e pepe and spicy pork ragu for mains. Both were delicious!!! Plenty of ragu too, which I like. The portion sizes are quite small, for lunch it was perfect but as a dinner, I'd wanted a little more. The service was friendly but a little unorganised, we were asked multiple times by various members of staff if we enjoyed our meal etc. Nice gesture but bot perfectly executed ;) I'd definitely come back. Great place for all kinds of occasions (maybe not a romantic date as it is a little too busy and tight for my liking)

Very delicious food, service was just okay. Some of the staff were very friendly and engaging while others I felt were annoyed I was there. The menu listed an "optional" service charge of 12% for the staff and kitchen which I don't mind, though when I paid my server didn't give me the option and didn't even bother to turn the card terminal towards me so I could see the number on the screen. I have no issue with there being a service charge for the staff but I disliked that the word optional was used when it was not given to me as an option. The silk handkerchiefs are delicious and overall the food and drink are very well priced. If you visit during busier times just be prepared for the space to be a bit tight and the staff to not be as attentive.

Luckily not queue long that before 1800. we are sitting at the bar table. The waitress are nice, the food is good, we ordered Burrata cheese as the antipasti, silk handkerchiefs, king prawn agnolotti as main, and also the Pistachio cannolo and Fior Di latte as dessert. Yummy 😋

Felt rather snubbed by the staff who placed us on a table upstairs which seemed to be the staff dining area - we were going to the restaurant to celebrate a birthday, the atmosphere in the hidden away upstairs area (in which we were the only paying customers) was lacking severely. This could have been made up for by beaming and warm service - instead it was inconsistent and lacking - we didn’t receive sharing plates for our starters without asking and our olives came after our cooked starter dishes. I felt that our group had been profiled and given crap seating based on our age group (early twenties). Our server was pushy with food and was encouraging us to over-order which we refrained from doing and had just the right amount of food. Really unfortunate for a celebratory meal. The pastas course was brilliant but the service and atmosphere was severely lacking and I felt that our group had a poor experience despite all the potential for what could have been a brilliant meal. Our experience will be memorable for all the wrong reasons. I imagine the experience is much better if you are seated in the main dining area downstairs but felt really disappointed so went elsewhere for desert (Bilmonte is a short walk away and serves some of the best gelato in London).

A pleasant experience though lacking refinement in places. It’s a shame the general atmosphere is clouded in darkness with the dim lighting only compounding this. The waiter was very amicable but did not regularly check in with us so we found we overstayed our welcome. The starter arrived reasonably early but the pasta itself rendered a spectacular wait of at least thirty minutes (despite our visit out of peak hours) which was quite disappointing for two hungry diners. We were positioned at the bar by the speakers which radiated music that could have been a little more soothing to the ears, or at least more distant. The food itself was tasty (like the gnocchi and the fried artichoke on Romano sauce) but I simply felt something in the general visit was lacking which could not be overlooked or negated by the pasta itself. Also, pedantic request but if the waiter is too occupied to routinely fill my glass of water, why not simply leave the jug of tap water with us?
